Refraction
2
How do you make light bend? When light rays enter a new medium they change in speed, causing them to bend or change direction.
3
What is refraction? The bending of light as it enters a new medium Examples: Air to water Water to air Water to glass What is a medium? A material through which a wave (light) travels
4
Refraction can cause you….. To see something that may not actually be there. That is called an Image.
5
Refraction Animation
6
Figure 8… Read the first paragraph on page 188 out loud.
7
What is the index of refraction? How much a ray of light bends when it enters a new medium. Liquids Carbonated Beverages 1.34 - 1.356 Cranberry Juice (25%) 1.351 Honey 1.484 Ice 1.309 Oil, vegetable (50° C) 1.47 Shampoo 1.362 Water (0° C) 1.33346 Water (100° C) 1.31766 Water (20° C) 1.33283

What is white light? All the colors on the visible spectrum R O Y G B I V
10
Can it be separated? You Bet!!! Use a prism to separate light into it’s various wavelengths.
11
THINK: How does a rainbow occur? White light from the sun enters a rain drop The rain drop acts as a prism causing the white light to separate. Displaying the visible spectrum.
