3 1. One day the earth brought a tremendous wave of destruction. The icy cold water could not chill the fires from the heart of the earth. Rocks were melted and boiled under the crust. The steam grew so strong that it violently erupted from the mouth of the volcano as hot red lava, flowing into the churning dark blue of the ocean. What is the structure of this paragraph? What are the clue words?

4 2. There are many types of disasters that are natural or man-made. One thing that all of them have in common is that they cause death and destruction. All disasters change the world, leaving scars and pain. However, most disasters are very different. Many are the result of mother nature, forces we can’t control. Unlike storms, man-made disasters are the result of bad decisions made by humans. What is the structure of this paragraph? What are the clue words?

5 3. Hurricane Katrina had been predicted for several days. The people of New Orleans had prepared for the devastating winds. They were not ready for the floods! Soon after the high winds began, water from the Mississippi and Gulf started rushing into the city. Now the people were battling high winds and water. The gushing water pounded the weak levees which later sent more water into the town. Finally, thousands had to evacuate as their homes had now become flooded. What is the structure of this paragraph? 7 5. Getting caught in a mudslide isn’t like taking a relaxing mud bath. When a mudslide gets moving, rocks, trees, cars and other dangerous objects get caught in the mix forming a “debris flow”. Giant boulders get tossed around like pebbles, causing entire homes to be swept away. What is the structure of this paragraph? What are the clue words?
