4 What was the Marshall Plan? -- Between 1948-51, the plan provided $13 billion to Western European nations. They used the money to build new housing, rebuild factories and cities, and get their economies growing again. -- The goal was containment – to block the further expansion of communism (the gov’t of the Soviet Union)

7 Post War Japan The US led the Allies in the occupation and rehabilitation of the Japanese state. Between 1945-52, the US occupying forces, led by General MacArthur, enacted widespread military, political, economic, and social reforms.

8 How it was decided… In a series of wartime conferences, countries discussed how to… 1.disarm Japan 2.deal with its colonies 3.stabilize the economy 4.prevent the remilitarization of Japan in the future.

9 Although other countries were involved, MacArthur had the final authority to make all decisions. The occupation of Japan can be divided into three phases: 1.Initial effort to punish and reform Japan 2.Work to revive the Japanese economy 3.Conclusion of a formal peace treaty and alliance.
