Offers social criticism in the hopes of effecting a change to or in society. Generally identifies some social foible or evil, depending upon the type of satire. There are 2 types of satire: Horatian Juvenalian

Named after the Roman satirist Horace Uses playful, light-hearted humor or wit to identify and mock some lesser social vice or stupidity within modern society Does not address major social issues

Named after the Roman satirist Juvenal Addresses social evils through scorn, fury, and/or ridicule. Does not have to involve humor, although it sometimes does, as in Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five More pessimistic, ironic or sarcastic tone to acknowledge moral and social indignation.
