One person talks at a time. Be a good listener. Always be working. Follow directions the first time they are given. Have fun!

6 The Literacy Program Literacy Workshop (4 – 20 minute rotations):
1. Guided Reading 2. Writing Mini-Lessons 3. Self-Selected Reading/Word Study/Computers 4. Independent Writing

7 Reading Program Determine Reading Level through TRC and Dibels.
Teach small groups based on Instructional Reading Level Take home reading, which will often include a question for students to answer independently.

8 TRC New reading assessment for this year.
Students read a book out loud and teacher records errors and self corrections. Students then answer 5 comprehension questions orally. This is followed by two written questions that students read and complete independently. Students must pass all components to be considered proficient at their reading level. TRC will be completed at the beginning, middle, and end of the year.

9 Writing Types of writing covered in second grade:
1st qtr - Narrative 2nd qtr - Informative 3rd qtr - Opinion 4th qtr - Informational Our writing program consists of: Writing journal Mini-lessons Focused writing Shared writing Rubrics are used to score writing!

10 How you can help with writing at home…
High frequency words (known in a few seconds- flashcards, etc.) Authentic and engaging writing activities Grocery list Letters/ s Scrapbooking Journals Standard and Temporary Spelling SPELLING

11 Spelling: Students are given a pretest of 21 words.
The first 18 words are a spelling pattern that we are studying that week. We will study 2 spelling patterns a week. The first 5 words each student misses will be his/her words. The last 3 words are high frequency words that everyone will study. Everyone will have a 8 spelling words per week. Friday is the test. Students will write all of the words, but will only be graded on their words.

13 Daily Math Activities:
Math Starter/Stumper Daily Lesson – These lessons are designed to meet one or more of the Common Core standards. Lessons are often hands on. The math books are not used daily because they do not cover all of the objectives and are used as a resource. Follow up activity Reinforcement/enrichment of skills previously taught

Math Facts Addition / subtraction concepts and regrouping Problem solving Place value Geometry – shapes and fractional parts of shapes Measurement and temperature Graphs and Venn Diagrams Time Number lines Money

16 Level 1 – Students performing at this level do not exhibit sufficient mastery of first grade knowledge and skills successfully to complete most assignments. Level 2 – Students performing at this level demonstrate inconsistent mastery of knowledge and skills. Level 3 – Students at this level consistently demonstrate mastery of grade level concepts and skills. Level 4 – Students at this level consistently perform in a manner that is clearly beyond the grade-level requirements and expectations.

20 MLC Mobile Learning Communities
During the summer, some teachers throughout the district went to workshops/classes for MLC training. Our classes will be exploring ways to enhance students’ learning by allowing them to bring devices to school (ipods, tablets, etc.) to incorporate into classroom activities. Only students whose teachers have completed the training will be participating in MLC. The district will be providing brochures with more information at a later date. Please do not send devices to school until we send home more information, including a starting date!
