First grade students at Valley View Elementary School Risks/Needs: Increase intake of fruits and vegetables Increase variety of types of foods they eat Childhood obesity Type II Diabetes

Goal: To increase the variety of types of foods that the first graders are willing to try To get the children to be more accepting and aware of the different appearances of foods To promote a healthy lifestyle in school as well as at home

We would like half of the first graders to increase their willingness to try new foods We would like at least half of the first graders to not judge food solely on its appearance We would like all students to be able to explain that foods of the same color may taste different

Gathered information from Ms. Clune as well as additional research about target population Read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

Had first graders list all of the green foods they have eaten

Had first graders color picture of fruits and vegetables

Children are easily influenced by their environment Social Cognitive Theory (role models) Children have little attention span making it crucial to have a plan and be flexible How to communicate effectively Familiarization with target population

Keep activities short and entertaining Present information in small amounts, rather than lecture for extended period of time Have all children participate and give constant feedback
