Chapter 2- Body Systems
2
Characteristics of a System A system is made of individual parts that work together as a whole. A system is usually connected to one or more systems. If one part of a system is missing or damaged, the system will not function well or may not function at all.
3
Example: A bike Gear system Brake system Suspension system If one of these parts breaks, the bike won’t function properly
4
Organ Systems Each body system is called an organ system Within each organ system are tissues and cells Cells of the same structure and function are grouped into tissues Groups of tissues form organs
6
Muscle Tissue Assists in body movement Helps organs carry out specific functions Example: The heart pumping blood Reaching for an apple
7
Nerve Tissue Transfers signals in the body and its organs to tell the body how to respond to changes in its internal and external environments
8
Connective Tissue Holds together and supports other tissues Connects, protects, and insulates organs
9
Epithelial Tissue Covers the surface of organs and the body Lines the inside of body parts, such as the mouth, esophagus and stomach
10
Your body has eleven systems that help it function properly Whoa! One at a time, please!
11
Circulatory System Transports: Blood Nutrients (chemicals needed for survival) Gases Water
12
Respiratory System Controls breathing Exchanges gases in lungs and tissues
13
Digestive System Takes in food Breaks down food Absorbs nutrients Eliminates solid waste
14
Excretory System Removes liquid and gas wastes from body
15
Immune System Defends the body against infection
16
Endocrine System Manufactures and releases hormones
17
Reproductive System Includes reproductive organs for producing offspring
18
Integumentary System Includes skin, hair and nails Creates waterproof barrier around body
19
Skeletal System Supports and protects the body Works with the muscles to move parts of the body
20
Muscular System Has muscles that work with bones to move parts of the body
21
Nervous System Detects changes in the environment and signals changes to the body Body then carries out a response
22
Next: Organizing Organ Systems How do systems work together?
