Diffusion Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

Isotonic solutions Isotonic solutions have equal concentrations of solute and water. In an isotonic solution, water will flow in and out of the cell at an equal rate. In an isotonic solution, water will flow in and out of the cell at an equal rate.

Hypertonic solutions Hypertonic solutions have more solute than water. (concentrated) In a hypertonic solution, water will flow out of the cell, causing the cell to shrink. In a hypertonic solution, water will flow out of the cell, causing the cell to shrink.

Hypotonic solutions Hypotonic solutions have less solute than water. (dilute) In a hypotonic solution, water will flow into a cell, causing the cell to swell. In a hypotonic solution, water will flow into a cell, causing the cell to swell.
