Day 3 – Prepositions and Annotations

Objectives Understand the importance and usage of prepositional phrases. Analyze a work of fiction for author’s point of view and understand the connotation v. denotation. Warm Up Compose a paragraph and describe how to reach the fire drill location. Do not use any prepositional phrases.

Prepositional Phrases: Prepositional phrases generally contain the preposition and an object of the preposition. Objects of the preposition MUST be nouns. Here are some examples:

Identify the preposition, noun, article, and adjective in the following: In bed (in, preposition and bed, noun) To Texas (to, preposition and Texas, noun) The noun may have modifiers. In the big bed (in, preposition / the, article / big, adjective / bed, noun) To the grocery store (to, preposition / the, article/ grocery, adjective / store, noun)

Subjects and verbs can NEVER be found in prepositional phrases. It is a good habit to learn to spot prepositional phases. Use ((parentheses)) to mark them; That way when you are looking for the subject and verb of the sentence, it will narrow down the search. ***RULE***

Prepositional Phrases Worksheet Put Parentheses around (the prepositional phrases). Circle the prepositions. Ex. With great care, I put the tuna fish into the cat’s dish on the floor. 1. The train raced through the tunnel. 2. No one worked during the strike. 3. Brian walked toward the ballpark after school. 4. Linda tripped clumsily over the rug. 5. Ask Dad for the keys to the boat. 6. The doorman stands inside the lobby during winter. 7. Have you looked for your umbrella in the closet? 8. The signature on the check is a forgery. 9. David drove past the driveway. 10. Without a doubt, this is the best restaurant in town.

11. The safe is behind the painting on this wall. 12. A flock of geese landed beyond the ridge. 13. An assortment of wild flowers grew in the meadow. 14. You sounded like Helen on the phone. 15. A horseshoe was nailed over the door. 16. We parked in the lot near the bank. 17. Without a doubt, Natalie will arrive before us. 18. Cassie has not been in town since last month. 19. Throughout the day, newscasters broke into the regular programs with special bulletins. 20. June sat on a bench against the wall.

Preposition Pair work I will assign your partner to you. Read the directions and flip the page over to start work on the questions. Identify the prepositions (P) and the objects of the prepositions (Op). Make sure you put the prep. phrase in parenthesis ( ).

Directions: Circle all the prepositional phrases in the following sentences. 1. After the movie the group of teenagers went to McDonalds for a burger. 2. Without sugar the blueberries were too sour for the dinner guests. 3. Sally worked from midnight to noon on her science project. 4. Over the river and through the woods to grandfather’s house we go. 5. He ate three boxes of popcorn with butter during the movie. 6. Despite his fear of water Jack saved the drowning puppy. 7. Janet took her lunch with her to the seminar. 8. At the Country Fair the child with the freckles won the talent contest. 9. For breakfast she likes bananas with strawberries. 10. Down the dark alley the cat chased a rat with long whiskers..

11. The police searched throughout the apartment complex for the escaped criminal. 12. During the summer Gordie fishes under the large oak tree beside Silver Creek. 13. By noon Jimmy decided a nap on the hammock would be nice. 14. Geese live in flocks while cattle live among herds. 15. Around the world music brings together people of all nationalities. 16. He likes movies about war; she prefers movies with a romantic theme. 17. Away from home for the first time Mary wrote numerous letters to her family. 18. Mud squished beneath her feet as Ann walked through the woods during a rainstorm. 19. The sculptures above the entrance were designed by a nineteenth century artist. 20. Inside the auditorium a group of dancers was practicing.

Reading Quiz Use your annotations on the “My Name” passage to answer the questions. You will have 8 minutes to complete the quiz. Make sure you write your name at the top right of the paper. Keep your eyes on your own paper and absolutely no talking.

Partner Expectations Always stay on task. Only talk about current topic. Be attentive and helpful. Pull your own weight. If these cannot be met, we cannot work in pairs.

Partner Reading Get into your pairs. Read and annotate “The Time Factor.” Read together and annotate your own copy of the passage. Focus on author’s purpose when annotating. Remember, do not only highlight. When finished, answer the three discussion questions on the back. Your answers must be in complete sentences.

Planning ahead is a measure of class. The rich and even the middle class plan for future generations, but the poor can plan ahead only a few weeks or days. What does Steinem say about class? Do you agree with Steinem’s view of the relationship between time and class?

Constructed Response Write a constructed response analyzing the first paragraph of “The Time Factor.” Do you agree with Steinem’s view of the relationship between time and class? Your response must be at least one paragraph. It must include: 1. Thesis: Introductory Statement identifying the main point 2. Reference Detail I 3. Elaboration, Signification, Explanation 4. Reference Detail II 5. Elaboration,Significance, Explanation 6. Synthesis: Conclude by connecting all ideas. You may discuss this with your partner but you must write your own copy
