3 Objective Students will learn to identify and write different sentence types. Using different sentences in your writing will make it more interesting to the reader and help you fulfill your purpose in writing. Why

5 Remember All clauses have a subject and a verb
Independent clauses make a complete statement and make sense alone. Example: I can stand Dependent clauses cannot make sense on their own. Example: since I was small

6 A simple sentence A simple sentence has ONE independent clause.
There are 4 types of simple sentences; SV SVV SSV SSVV

7 Process in reading sentences
Find the action or state of being word. Don’t forget helping verbs! Ask Who or What (verb)? Hint: sometimes it helps to cross out prepositions and infinitives, they can NEVER have the sentences subject or verb in them.

14 Compound sentences A compound sentence has 2 or more independent clauses. There are 2 types of compound sentences I,cI I;I In creating or finding compound sentences, you are using 2 simple sentences and putting them together.

22 Clues to help me identify dependent clauses
Subordinating conjunctions This is NOT a full list, the words show a relationship between the independent clause and the dependent clause.

23 Sequencing complex sentences
If the dependent clause comes first- you have to have a comma. If the independent clause comes first- you don’t have to have a comma. Look at cue card 13
