JFK’s Inaugural Address Inaugural Address - First speech for a person sworn in as President. Modern Presidents typically reference American history, the importance of the occasion, and hope for the future. Question for the Day? How can the use of rhetorical devices enhance a speech?

JFK’s Inaugural Address January 20, 1961 - JFK sworn in as 35th President. Cold (20 degrees) with snow and sunshine as a backdrop. Kennedy used his youth and excitement to produce a famous inaugural address. His audience —> People from around the world.

JFK’s Inaugural Address His goals: – Inspire the nation, – Acknowledge the challenges of the Cold War – Make clear his hope for peace *Be brief in his speech *Talking to his advisor Ted Sorensen JFK remarked, “I don’t want to be a windbag.”

JFK’s Inaugural Address Sorensen studied other speeches in American history such as the Gettysburg Address. Kennedy’s is shorter than most. (1,355) words Kennedy focused on word choice and using short phrases

JFK’s Inaugural Address Most famous portion, “And so my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. This speech is important for JFK because of how small his margin is in the 1960 election. Following the inaugural address his approval jumps to 75%
