Slavery in the U.S. After Rev. War, northern states began to end slavery By 1790, more than 90% of enslaved African Americans lived in the South Northern economy based on industrial labor paid with wages Southern economy based on cash crops & slavery Slavery issue – property rights v. human rights Most Americans believed that property rights were protected by the Constitution

Compromise of 1850 CA population grew from 14,000 to 93,000 between 1848 and 1850 CA wanted to apply for statehood as a free state Senate debate over admitting CA as free state -John Calhoun (SC) threatens SC will leave Union -Webster (MA) opposes slavery, but will compromise -William Seward (NY) – no slavery, no compromise Henry Clay crafts a compromise

Parts of the Compromise of 1850 1. CA is admitted to Union as a free state 2. NM, UT are organized into territories and their people will decide the slavery issue 3. Fugitive Slave Act – made it a federal crime to assist escaped slaves 4. Slave trade was outlawed in District of Columbia (Washington DC), but slavery itself could still exist there.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin Harriet Beecher Stowe from Maine She lived in Cincinnati OH and heard first hand accounts of the cruelties of slavery 1851- she wrote a series of short stories about slave life for an anti-slavery newspaper 1852- published stories as Uncle Tom’s Cabin 1853- 300,000 copies had been sold in the US Result: American society become more divided (North- saw evils of slavery through book; South-enraged southern plantation owners)

Kansas Nebraska Act (1854) Senator Stephan Douglas (IL) knew that a railroad connecting CA to Chicago could transform Chicago into a major city Proposed land organized into Kansas & Neb. Territories But Missouri Compromise prevented slavery above 36 deg Result: 1. opened the possibility of slavery in Kansas & Neb. 2. popular sovereignty will decide the issue there 3. repeals (ends) Missouri Compromise 4. Northern people were furious; held meetings & petitions
