Unit 3, Lesson 6 Timeline of the Spanish-American War

Smart Start CREATE A TIME LINE FOR A PERSONAL EVENT. (Last vacation you had, last time you went out to eat at a restaurant, when you got a new puppy, etc. – if can be any event you want to use.) When did it begin? When did it end? What were the things that happened between the beginning and the end? Include at least five (5) things that happened and place them on your time line.  -------|------------|------------|------------|------------|--------- 

Today’s Objectives SWBAT explain the aspects of life in Cuba that led to the Spanish-American war. SWBAT create a timeline of the Spanish-American war.

Keep in mind… In this lesson, you are going to have to stretch to create connections between a visual representation of time to a written representation of time. You need to be able to THINK about what makes sense logically.

The Spanish-American War Cuba was a colony – the Spanish government that was ruling over them was across the ocean. Like most colonized areas, the Spanish government was dictatorial when dealing with Cuba. Cuba revolted against Spain, with the support of the United States. Important note: the Cubans were revolting, for them this was a revolution. But this is the Spanish-American war because Spain and the US were the big players and lost/won the most out of the fight.

Important Questions What do you think the atmosphere was like in Cuba before the start of the Spanish-American War? Why did Cubans want to revolt against Spain? Why was the Cuban Revolution called the Spanish-American War?

Group Work Read and annotate the article. Then create a timeline of the Spanish-American War.
