Spanish American War Causes: ●Spain controlled Cuba and Puerto Rico ●1895 Cuban’s revolted and many were imprisoned by Spain ●US angered over Cuban imprisonments and loss of US businesses in Cuba ●US Sent the battleship the Maine to Cuba ●The Maine’s goal was to protect lives of US citizens and property in Cuba. ●Feb. 15, 1898 the Maine explodes and is destroyed killing 260 ●Congress declared war April 25, 1898

Yellow Journalism ●False or exaggerated reporting to sell newspapers ●Newspapers falsely reported that Spain torpedoed the Maine ●Newspaper articles against Spain made American citizens demand war.

War with Spain ●The US destroyed Spanish fleets in Philippines ●Theodore Roosevelt led “Rough Riders” volunteer soldiers ●African American soldiers “Buffalo Soldiers” were experienced fight in the Native American Wars so they were key in helping defeat Spain.
