Warm Up Question March 29, 2011 The President last night claimed the United States intervened in Libya in order to stop a massacre of Libyan citizens and to stop possible future massacres. Do think the United States is doing the right thing? Why or Why not?

List the improvements from technology on American society. Evaluate the differences of the North and South in terms of the manufacturing and economy. Industrial Revolution….what is it? Is it a Revolution with battles and war? No Is it a battle for freedom? No -The Industrial Revolution is in the way things are made in the United States. -This chapter we will focus on how the United States changes the way it produces products in America.

Factories, Machines and Steam…Oh my! -The Industrial Revolution changed the way people worked. -The use of water to power machines brought workers and machines together in a factory, this is called a factory system. -Workers had to work specific hours and keep up with the machines. -James Watt invented the first steam engine in 1765. -This allowed factories to be built away from the water source and built in cities

Factories Read Pgs 386-387 Mass Production- Interchangeable parts- What was factory life like during the Industrial Revolution? What is your opinion of child labor? Right or wrong? Why? Rapid manufacture of large numbers of identical objects Identical pieces that could be assembled quickly by unskilled workers

The North -The North had a large explosion in population. -The main reason is a large increase of immigration through large ports in the North. Increase of population + new technology = A huge growth of factories. What new inventions helped northern industry to grow? Read Pg 391-392.

The South -The South was an agricultural society. -They did not have as many cities because the population was spread out to set up plantations and large farms Plantations are large estates farmed by many workers. -Slaves are the large working population in the South. -By 1860 there will be over 4 million of slaves working in the South.

Cotton Gin Invented by Eli Whitney in 1763 Made harvesting the cotton from the plant ten times faster. Allowed more plantations to expand and increase the rise of plantations.

Pa Turnpike Turnpike-Is a toll road. The PA Turnpike first started in 1795 connected Philadelphia and Lancaster.

Erie Canal Canal- Is a channel that is dug across land and filled with water. Erie Canal was finished in 1825 and connected the Erie Canal to the Hudson River to New York City
