1 Counselors have met with seniors, and class sponsors will meet with them next Wednesday. We are sharing the same information with parents, so everyone is on the same page!

3 NEXT Wednesday, October 14 th  Collect superlative votes  Hand out/collect cap and gown orders  Graduation requirements reiterated  Panoramic picture (Seniors should wear RED)  Claire’s Gourmet fundraiser kickoff Opportunities to reduce costs of prom tickets or senior dues!  Hypnotist! – students must have formed signed by parent to go up on stage

4  The Seniors would like to use some of the funds they have raised to renovate the courtyard, which is open to seniors for lunch.  Renovations would include:  Repairing (or re-doing) the pond  Constructing a small gazebo  Gardening (trim bushes, plant flowers, etc.)  Games such as cornhole  We would love parent assistance in these projects if anyone is interested!

5  $50 until the end of 2015!  $60 if paid after Prom  Must be paid by April 1st or dues become an obligation. Expenses covered:  Senior Dinner  Senior Picnic (Rehearsal)  Cap and Gown  Graduation programs, flowers, etc.

9  Obligations must be cleared before seniors will be allowed to purchase prom tickets and participate in graduation rehearsal!

10  Date TBD (often the last Friday of Senior Exams)  ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY  Seniors meet in cafeteria  Caps, gowns, tassels, and tickets will all be handed out at rehearsal  Gown orders will be taken at the senior meeting and are paid for out of Senior Dues  Ticket requests will be collected in January in the students’ English classes  Picnic immediately following rehearsal

11  Date:Tuesday, May 31, 2016  Time:10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. *Students should arrive at DAR by 8:45 a.m.  Place:DAR Constitution Hall Doors will be closed at 9:45 a.m. for the procession and will reopen at 10:15 a.m. Please arrive early so you are not locked out, missing your student’s entrance!

13  Student needs to know grade point average (Found in Naviance)  Student needs to know SAT/ACT scores (also found in Naviance and will be mailed to you). Register for the fall SAT/ACT if student plans to retake.  Student should create an organizational system that will help you sort and easily access your information  Create a checklist  Create a master calendar for test dates, fees, deadlines  Develop a filing system  Student needs to ask academic teacher(s) for recommendations  Complete the classroom reflection for each teacher

14 Early Decision (binding) Early Action (early deadline) Regular Admission Rolling Admission Open Admission  Be aware of college admission deadlines- meet them all!!  Keep copies of everything you send to colleges  Maintain good grades ALL year long  Check out the “academic common market” schools. Students may qualify for instate tuition at out of state public universities if they study certain majors.

15  Reach  Target  Safety  Ideally, at least 5 schools (depending on GPA) Accredited programs and colleges If you qualify for free or reduced meals, you qualify for a fee waiver for testing and college application fees. See Ms. Lanning for waivers. Make sure you complete a new form this school year.

16  You must know your log in and password (email address and student ID). If you don’t know it, see your counselor or Ms. Lanning.  Once logged in, click on the ‘Colleges’ tab and add colleges under “Colleges I’m thinking about”.  Once colleges are added, you will see how each college accepts transcripts under ‘Delivery type’ (by mail or electronic) and if it’s a Common Application school.

17 Transcript request form Allow 4 weeks for your transcript request to be processed. Be sure you have a parent signature in all 3 sections.. This form is only submitted one time. The first 3 transcripts are free, after that there is a $3 charge per transcript. Fees are due at time of transcript request. Make sure you send official SAT/ACT test scores to the colleges in which you are applying (through college board or act).

18  Search for scholarships  Naviance  Career Center  Fastweb  Prepare to apply for financial aid.  FAFSA (January)  Once colleges inform you of your admission status let them know your acceptance or rejection prior to their deadline.  Inform Ms. Malner of ALL your acceptances.  Send thank you notes to teachers who wrote recommendation letters.

19 Partnership with Universities of Shady Grove

20  Students should take this if interested in attending Montgomery College or other community colleges  The purpose of ACCUPLACER is to determine your course placement. 21  Attend the College Fair at AEHS on Oct. 12 th 2015 from 6:00-8:00PM!  Attend Financial Aid workshop on December 9 th 2015 from 6:00-7:30PM!  Attend college visits in the Career Center, students will meet admissions officers who may be the one to read their application! *register via Naviance*  Visit Naviance for college and scholarship searches.  Attend on the spot admissions events at local high schools!  Attend the HBCU College Fair, at Paint Branch on February 17, 2016!

22  SSL is a Maryland State Department of Education graduation requirement.  Most students need 75 hours in order to graduate.  Visit www.mcpsssl.org to find approved sites or look in the SSL binder in the counseling office, listen to announcements, check out the bulletin board, watch for postings on the list serve.  Turn in activity verification forms in the main office or the counseling office.  See Mrs. Keller with questions.
