What is Combining Like Terms?  Lets break it down  Combining-To put together  Like- Similar  Terms- Numbers or letters that are separated by an operational sign ( +, -, x, ÷)

Types of Terms  Expression- a combination of terms separated by + or – or both  Monomial- An expression with only a single Term without an operation sign.  Binomial- An expression containing two terms  Trinomial- An expression containing three terms  Polynomial- An expression containing more than three terms

 Turn to your neighbor and come up with two examples of monomials, binomials, trinomials, and polynomials.

Combining Like Terms  How do we simplify 6x + 4 + 5x + 2 ?  Step 1: Combine the two terms of x  6x + 5x = 11x  Step 2: Combine the two integers  4 + 2 = 6  Our expression can be simplified to 11x + 6

Combining Like Terms  Simplify the following expressions  8x + 9y +2x - 4y  (5+4x) + 7  If there are no like terms inside the parenthesis, dissolve them and simplify

Multiplying and Dividing Exponents  When you multiply two exponents together you add the powers together  Example y 2 x y 2 = y 4  When you divide two exponents you subtract the powers  Example x 3 ÷ x 2 = x
