Element of Art: COLOR

Made by Ms. Scronce for her wonderful art class!!!!

Color Theory When you paint the sun, what color do you use? Yellow? Orange? Now look at the sun in the picture. What color do you see?

White? It is really all the colors of the rainbow! When the sun shines on an object some light is absorbed and some bounces off (reflects). The color you SEE is the reflected light!!!!!

In the picture above……what color was reflected off the flower? What colors were absorbed by the flower? Let’s Try A Few More Examples!!!

Get out a sheet of paper. TRY to answer the questions on the next slide. (hint hint: if you can’t….that is okay, just pay attention today and fill them in as we go along!!!)

Questions-Activity What are the Primary colors? Can you mix any colors to make these primary? What are the Secondary colors? Which colors do you combine to get these colors? How are these placed on the color wheel? Which of these colors are warm colors? Which of these colors are cool colors?

This is the standard COLOR WHEEL!!!!! Draw this now in your sketchbook.

Look at the solid line triangle. The solid triangle connects the 3 PRIMARY COLORS: red, yellow, blue. These are PURE colors. These colors CANNOT be made from mixing any other colors.

Look at the dotted line triangle. The dotted triangle connects the 3 SECONDARY COLORS: green, purple, orange. You make these colors by mixing the two primary colors beside it. So, what do you mix to get Purple? Orange? Green?

Before we try to paint these colors…..let’s look at another reason we might need to mix colors. Let’s use icing and decorate a cookie (like Ace of Cakes)!!!!! Create (in sketchbook) a design for a square cookie. The design should celebrate art, a famous artist, favorite piece of artwork….it should be creative and easy to recognize as either an image or pattern. Your group table will have a red, yellow, and blue bowl of icing. Your cake should include all primary and secondary colors. Be creative, have fun….and then we might enjoy these cakes!!!!

WARM COLORS & COOL COLORS Warm colors-found on the left side of the color wheel. Picture a fire or the sun Red, Orange, Yellow Cool colors-found on the right side of the color wheel. Picture a cold, snowy landscape Blue, Green, Purple

Color Vocabulary Words (you will see these again on a test) Hue= a color’s name (ex. Yellow) Value=the lightness or darkness of a hue (ex. Pale yellow) Intensity=the brightness or dullness of a hue (ex. Bright Yellow) Primary Colors=red, yellow, blue (pure colors that can not be made from mixing any other colors) Secondary Colors=orange, green, purple (made from mixing the primary colors)

Kandinsky Artist known for using the bright pure colors from the color wheel with circles, lines, and shapes.
