A port number represents an endpoint or "channel" for network communications. Port numbers allow different applications on the same computer to utilize network resources without interfering with each other. Ports and IP's are commonly blocked by firewalls and institutional policies. You must have at least some ports open in order to have seismology programs work To establish a connections between two computers you need to know the IP of the machine and it must appear to be a public IP. You also must know the port number that the module is opening the socket on.
