2 The 5.12 Sichuan Earthquake May 12, 2008 at 2:28 pm in Sichuan, Wenchuan County A tremendous earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude 69,225 killed, 374,640 wounded, and 17,939 missing More than 900,000 patients hospitalized

3 2,880 beds 2,610 employees (2,257 medical staff, 517 professors) 2,680,000 out-patient visits/year (~8000/day) 52,000 in-patients/year (~10days) 45,000 operations/year (~150/day) Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences & Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital

4 2,500 inpatients transferred to safer location within 20 min 20 ongoing operations finished without interruption 12 patients stayed in ICU with continuous treatment Emergency Responses During Earthquake

5 The Rescue Command Center 8 working groups: Coordinating Center Medical Treatment Material and Supply Infection Control Psychological Support Media and Newspaper Safety and Order Statistics Reporting

6 SPPH On-Site Rescue Medical Teams (28 members, 6 ambulances) On the 1 st day, performed 17 major operations, over 200 wound cleaning operations. In total, treated 1,779 patients, performed 386 operation, and transferred over 700 other patients

7 The first group of patients arrived two hours after the quake On May 12 th alone, SPPH received 679 patients, conducted 79 operations, and performed over 500 X-ray examinations

8 Standing up to the challenge: SPPH created three earthquake patient wards with a total of 210 beds Temporarily ceased other non-emergency surgeries In-Patients showed spirit of giving and requested to be discharged Many volunteers offered to help

9 A Scientific Approach to Better Treatment Early diagnosis, Early surgery, Early prevention, Early dialysis, and Early mental care.

10 Collective Efforts Made Medical Miracles SPPH: Therapy Center for patients requiring intensive care Expanded the ICU ward by 60 extra beds Formed a medical team of experts from multiple disciplines Utilized precise monitoring systems and intensive therapy

17 Sichuan-Hong Kong Rehabilitation Center 川港康复中心 地震无情, 香江有爱 The Sichuan earthquake was so powerful that tremors were felt in Hong Kong approximately three minutes after the quake, continuing for about half a minute. This was the most distant earthquake known to be felt in Hong Kong. The people of Hong Kong felt the great impact of the earthquake and responded with even greater sympathy, compassion, and generosity.
