Monasteries and ConventsMonasteries and Convents Many men and woman gave up their daily lives to devote their lives to God. They became monks and nuns.

Views Towards Women Women were seen as weak, and needed the guidance of man. The church tried to protect women, or give them rights by setting an age limit for marriage and fining men who beat their wives. All though men were fined, women were punished more intensely for similar things.

The Importance of the Church The church was the largest building in the town, so it also served as a social center. Daily life revolved around the Christian Calendar The main events of a person’s life took place in the church

Popes Popes deemed themselves representatives of God on Earth. They claimed papal supremacy- authority over all secular rulers including kinds and emperors. He had an army of church men who supervised church activities.

Force of PeaceForce of Peace The church tried to use its authority to end warfare among nobles. It declared periods of temporary peace known as the Truce of God. It demanded that fighting stop between Friday and Sunday each week and on religious holidays.

Pulling Europe Back Into The Dark Ages All though the Church tried to stop all wars going on during religious times, it may have caused Europe to get pulled back into the Dark Ages. Many religious differences between wealthy and poor people began to rise. The Church also restricted scientific advancement because every explanation of a natural event or observation had to fit with the agreed biblical understanding from Rome.
