PROJECT PROPOSAL BY ZLATA MARKOVIĆ

One of the major problem of environmental protection in Valjevo is waste from households Major aspects of the problem are: Major aspects of the problem are: Large quantity of wasteLarge quantity of waste Non-separation of different materials in wasteNon-separation of different materials in waste Small amount of recycled and reused secondary raw materialsSmall amount of recycled and reused secondary raw materials Disposal mostly of waste on landfillDisposal mostly of waste on landfill Absence of proper waste management strategyAbsence of proper waste management strategy

TARGET GROUP Primary target group: state and local government, responsible not only for strategy and waste management but also for their practical applicationPrimary target group: state and local government, responsible not only for strategy and waste management but also for their practical application Secondary target group: householders as producers of wasteSecondary target group: householders as producers of waste

PROJECT OBJECTIVE On completion of this project we will have: On completion of this project we will have: Waste reductionWaste reduction Separation of recyclable materialsSeparation of recyclable materials Waste collection servicesWaste collection services Well-organised network of companies for waste treatmentWell-organised network of companies for waste treatment Lower consumption of : natural resourses, energy, waterLower consumption of : natural resourses, energy, water Far fewer raw materialsFar fewer raw materials Produce of less emissionsProduce of less emissions Consumers who buy recycled productsConsumers who buy recycled products

ACTION PLAN ACTIVITY: Obligations and benefits for waste separation in householdsObligations and benefits for waste separation in households Education of householders about recyclable and non-recyclable materialsEducation of householders about recyclable and non-recyclable materials Waste collector for a minimum two recyclable materials from householdsWaste collector for a minimum two recyclable materials from households Transport of waste from collector to recycle centresTransport of waste from collector to recycle centres TIME: June 2012. RESPONSIBLE: Local authorities RESOURCES: From local budget and from sold secondary raw materials OUTCOME: Waste reduction on the landfill, higher incomes for town, higher care of citizens for environmental protection

ACTION PLAN ACTIVITY: Waste separation in households TIME: June 2012. RESPONSIBLE: Householders OUTCOME: active participation in environmental protection

ACTION PLAN ACTIVITY: Network of recycling centres in all parts of stateNetwork of recycling centres in all parts of state TIME: 2020. RESPONSIBLE: State and local authorities RESOURCES: From local and state budget, foreign investment OUTCOME: available centres for waste treatment, better conditions for waste treatment, lower costs of waste transport, saving of energy and row materials, lower production costs

CONCLUSION Recycling is environmentaly beneficial. Most common components of household waste which are recyclable are paper, glass, metal cans and plastic. Recycling of these components requires less energy and produces fewer emissions. Paper is component wich can’t be recycled indefinitely. On the other hand glass and metal are recyclable with no loss in quality and metal cans also have high economic value. Problem with plastic is that there are about 50 different types of plastic which must be sorted. Collecting and recycling waste is only the first part of recycling cycle. The loop is closed only when consumers buy recycled products. Also, there has been a perception that recycled materials are lower quality than those made from virgin materials. Big challenge for the future is to improve recycling of composite packaging made up of more than one material. Still, the best way to manage solid waste is to not produce it in the first place. It can be achieved with buying durable products whitch should be mantained and repaired to ensure longer production life; using reuseable packaging; borrowing or renting items we don’t use often; etc.
