5 L. O. SWBAT explain each step of the scientific method.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD The scientific method is a process for experimentation used to: explore observations and answer questions search for cause and effect relationships in nature

Fair test It is important for your experiment to be a fair test. A fair test occurs when you change only one factor (variable) and keep all other conditions the same.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD Steps 1. Ask a ? 2. Research 3. Hypothesis 4. Experiment 5. Analyze Data 6. Conclusion 7. Communicate Results

Hypothesis Is an educated guess about how things work. “If [I do this], then [this] will happen.” Must easily be measured. Remember: your experiment must be repeatable. (repeated by others)

Example Hypothesis "If I raise the temperature of a cup of water [independent variable], then the amount of sugar that dissolves [dependent variable] will increase because of the temperature increase."

SCIENTIFIC METHOD Changing ideas or new information might cause a scientist to back up or repeat steps at any point in the process.

SUMMARY * A summary is in paragraph form and at least 3-4 sentences long. Today we learned about … – What is a hypothesis? – How can new information influence or change an experiment?

HOMEWORK Homework – Getting to know your textbook worksheet due next class.
