DEFINITIONS COALITION: Organizations working together in a common effort for a common purpose in order to make more effective and efficient use of resources. NETWORK: Individuals or organizations who share information, ideas, or resources.

DEFINITIONS PARTNERSHIP: Individuals or organizations working together in a side-by-side effort to accomplish a common goal with a shared sense of purpose and a shared responsibility for the outcome.

HOW TO STRUCTURE A COALITION Involve all key players. Choose a realistic strategy. Establish a shared vision. Agree to disagree in the process. Make promises that can be kept. Build ownership at all levels. Publicize their success.

COALITION GOAL SETTING ROAD MAP TO SUCCESS GOAL: A specific end result you want in a certain amount of time. –SHORT TERM GOAL –LONG TERM GOAL –GROUP GOAL –INDIVIDUAL GOAL

ESTABLISHING GOALS Develop a list of priorities. Share what problems or needs are being addressed by your agency/organization. Identify group goals. –new concerns to address –enhancing present work on problems

DECISION MAKING PROCESS Define the problem Decide on a method for decision making Gather information List possible alternative solutions Develop pros and cons for alternatives Decide on the alternative & carry it out. Evaluate

TURF ISSUES “Turf-ism” is the non-cooperation or conflict between organizations with common goals or interests. Expected to work together in a given situation, yet they compete or don’t communicate well.

TURF ISSUES Turf-ism exists because partners: Perceive incompatible goals Defend their domain-don’t want to lose power AND…The most important turf issue!
