BELL WORK Write about a time you made a decision and later realized you made the wrong decision. Could you have done something different? Was the decision yours or did you listen to someone else? Also write down a short term goal you have for this class and a long term goal you have in life.

OBJECTIVES Describe how decisions can affect your health of you and others. Develop decision making skills to develop healthful choices. Identify the benefits of setting goals

DECISIONS As you grow older you become more responsible. Meaning you have to understand the short and long term consequences of your decisions.

DECISIONS Even minor decisions have major consequences. Example “deciding to go to a party where drugs and alcohol are being used” What would be some major consequences?

THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS The decision making process is a series of six steps to help you make the best decision. decision making The process of making a choice or finding a solution

STEP 1 STATE THE SITUATION –What are the facts –Is anyone else involved

Step 2 List the options –Make a list of all your options –Be as complete as possible

Step 3 Weight the possible outcomes –Use the H.E.L.P. formula H – Healthful E – Ethical L – Legal P – Parental Approval

Step 4 Consider your values –Values will help you make the decision best for YOU. values The beliefs and principles that guide the way a person lives.

Step 5 Make a decision and act –Once you have completed steps 1-4 it’s time to make the decision and act. –Commit to the decision

Step 6 Evaluate your decision –If the outcome was not what you wanted, start over and try again.
