Lesson 2 – IP Addressing IP Address (IPv4 – Version 4) Private and Public Address Brief Introduction to IPv6 – Version 6
2
IP Address (IPv4 - version) IP addresses allow hosts to indentify it and participate on IP based network. Is a 32-bit binary number represented as four octets (four 8-bit values). Is represented by one of two ways: Binary: 11000000. 10101000. 00000001. 00000001 Decimal: 192. 168. 1. 1 The IP address includes both the network and the host address.
3
IP Address (IPv4 - version) contd The Subnet Mask is a 32-bit number that is associated with each IP address to identify the network and host portion. Range of 8-bit values Min : 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 = 0 Max : 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 = 255 Example: 255.255.255.0 or 11111111. 11111111. 11111111. 00000000 Task 11000000 = 11001100 = 11100011 = 11001010 = 11001101 = 11101011 = Bit Place87654321 Decimal Value 1286432168421 192 204 227 202 205 235

IP Address (IPv4 - version) Classes of IP Address Network Portion and Host Portion
5
IP Address (IPv4 - version) How to remember Range of IP Classes? Just remember Highest Significant bits of first octets of an IP address.
6
IP Address (IPv4 - version) Private and Public Addresses Private IP addresses are specifically reserved to be used in private network by companies. Public IP addresses are specifically used when moving on (connecting) to Internet.
7
IPv6 Address (version - 6) IPv6 is the next-generation Internet protocol. It was originally created as the answer to IPv4’s inevitable, looming address-exhaustion crisis. It is 128 bit in length. Benefits of IPv6 More Efficient Routing More Efficient Packet Processing Directed Data Flows Simplified Network Configuration Support For New Services Security
