Putiran Writing by Heba, Vanessa, Alexis, and Gabe

Style With Puritan writing almost all of it focused on religion and the idea of being “pure”. “It is true that Puritanism encouraged its believers to search their daily experiences, both physical and mental, for signs of God's workings in them and through them”. so most of the writings had a “old” style to them and a had very old traditional beliefs put in the writings

Figurative language and Devices "Of Plymouth Plantation" -William Bradford ● Symbol: ○ "When as that old serpent could not prevail by those fiery flames" ● Repetition: ○ "God" and "Satan" ● Hyperbole: ○ "What tears gush from every eye and pithy speeches pierced each heart"

Attitude The attitude towards puritan writing is very biblical due to their strict beliefs and it’s very negative towards anybody who would sin. For example, Hawthorne speaks negatively about Hester due to her sins that she has committed. Puritans speak very highly of their religion and their beliefs.

Word Choice Jonathan Edward’s “Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God” *Strong word choice to intimidate listeners* “ What would not those poor damned hopeless souls give for one day’s opportunity such as you now enjoy!” “There is no other reason to be given why you have not gone to hell, since you have sat here in the house of God, provoking his pure eyes by your sinful wicked manner of attending his solemn worship.” “The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked: his wrath towards you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else, but to be cast into the fire; he is of purer eyes than to bear to have you in his sight; you are ten thousand times more abominable in his eyes, than the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours. “

Word Choice Way to control people Uses fear The words he used makes the people feel guilty about their lack of religious action.
