2 What is Insubordination? Defiance of authority Refusal to carry out orders.

3 Interesting Facts 1)Insubordination itself is rare in school. 2)Insubordination arising from an escalating situation is common (something small turns into something BIG ). 3)Other than breaking the law (drugs, weapons, etc.) it is the most harshly punished offense in public schools.

5 An example of how a typical insubordination referral occurs?

6 A student behaves in a way that disrupts the class. The teacher publicly reprimands the student for misbehaving. The student makes a disrespectful comment in return. The teacher approaches the student and in a loud voice tells the student that he "had better shape up" or "be kicked out of the class." The student responds by standing up and verbally abusing the teacher. The instructor calls for an administrator, who comes to the room and escorts the angry student to the office to be disciplined.

7 In this power-struggle, neither the teacher nor the student wins. While the teacher may get some short-term relief by ejecting the student from the room, she has lost valuable teaching time because of the confrontation. The student may be happy to escape the class---but he is certainly not learning anything while sitting in the principal's office or at home while OSS.

8 Survey Time Raise your hand if you have witnessed an event similar to this thus far this school year? Fact: Teachers do not enjoy these confrontations. Fact: Successful students avoid theses confrontations

9 What Kind of Student is Insubordinate? Students Without Role Models? Students With Failing Grades? Kids from Broken Homes? Gang Members? Normal Students Who Respond Poorly to Stress

10 The Answer: How did referrals decrease so much in 4 years? The use of ISS for the period under the authority of their teacher. 1)Time away from each other for Teacher and Student to De-Stress! 2)Prevents teacher or student from becoming stressed and saying or doing something they regret or don’t really mean. 3)Prevents a student from becoming embarrassed in an escalating confrontation.

11 We believe that if students know what is expected of them, and without stress influencing their decision making process, will make the best decisions possible.

12 Revisit that Scenario A student behaves in a way that disrupts the class. The teacher publicly reprimands the student for misbehaving. The student makes a disrespectful comment in return. This time, the teacher walks over, and asks the student to wait outside in the hall for a moment.

13 Option 1: A few minutes later the teacher and student talk, expectations are explained, perhaps a little punishment is issued, perhaps not, and the student returns to class. Learning. Life is Good.

14 Option 2: A few min. later, the student is upset, angry, and stressed. When the teacher comes out into the hall, they both recognize that a conversation will not solve the problem. The teacher asks the student to go to ISS for the period. Later that day, the teacher and student talk. Student explains why they behaved in that manner. Teacher explains the expectations. Punishment may/may not be given. Again. Life is Good.

15 Sound Advice 1)Recognize your emotions. When you feel that you are on the verge of losing control – ask for a “Time Out.” 2)Later when calm: Talk to the teacher about the issue. Learn their expectations so you may rise to meet them.
