Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 2 Remember a Web-site should support a Web Presence i.e. the necessary interaction between an organisation and those in the Internet/Web community they wish to do business with. Organisation Intranet Internal E-Business Customers Internet Business-to-Customer E-Commerce Suppliers Extranet Business-to-Business E-Procurement Both up and Down the E-Business Supply Chain:

Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 3 Design Decisions? Define your Business Goals: decide which business processes are best supported (or replaced). Be clear why you are creating this site: by deciding what you want your Web-site to Be and Do. Make sure that you: Know your Audience!
4
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 4 Remember your Audience? You are NOT designing for yourself: design is no substitute for functionality. Make it easy to find what matters: snail-mail addresses and telephone numbers should not always be easily found! Have realistic expectations: even if they are modest ones. Start small, but design for scalability: Web-sites suit a phased development, but “Under Construction” notices are BAD!
5
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 5 Things NOT to do on a Web Page! Don't crowd images. Don't be inconsistent with structure. Don't have too much information (data?) on a single page. Don't leave the important stuff for the bottom. Don't violate white-space balance. Don't forget other platforms & browsers. Don't forget to make the title of each Web- page very descriptive.
6
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 6 “Keep it Simple” And your Web-site will be: easier to build; consistent structure, common ‘look-and-feel’, easier navigation, etc. easier to maintain; no Web-site is ever complete, they are always ‘under construction’, so NEVER say so! And remember that “less is definitely more”: except when it comes to testing!
7
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 7 Use your Web Development Plan! 1.Business Analysis; What business processes/problems does the Case Study organisation have? 2.Competition Analysis; How have other, similar, organisations used the Web in order to support their business processes. 3.Content Decisions; Which business processes might be best supported, and which problems might best be solved, by an Internet/Web solution? 4.Site Map; How will the Content be organised, i.e. what shape will the Web-site be?
8
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 8 How to Build a Web-site? Name all files on the ‘Site Map’. this will save a lot of anguish later! Develop the ‘standard’ Web-page: most (all?) Web Pages will look like this. make the major navigation ‘work’. Use copies of the ‘standard’ Web-page: for a consistent ‘look-and-feel’. adding the Page Content as required: from existing documents if possible? Test, test, test!

Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 10 Develop the ‘Standard’
11
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 11 Use the ‘Standard’ Open the ‘standard’: save (immediately!) with a new file name, i.e. refer to the names on your ‘Site-Map’. Add the ‘Page Content’: utilising existing text and images where ever possible. Examine the Results: and make any necessary adjustments. Repeat for all Web-pages: using the same ‘standard’.
12
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 12 Look at all of your Web-pages using Internet Explorer
13
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 13 Take Your Time & “Keep it Simple” Spend quite a lot of time developing your ‘standard’ Web-page: you don’t want to have to change the ‘standard’, having already used it to build several Web-pages with the original ‘bad’ version. Make sure that you only work with files that are located in ONE folder: or work only on a floppy disk; as that is what you have to hand in. And remember that “less is definitely more”: except when it comes to testing!

Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 15 The Zeitgeist Club – Case Study The Zeitgeist Club is a major concert venue, located in Scarborough, which provides a wide-range of entertainment including concerts, discos and private functions. The club has an extensive bar and food facility and provides merchandising to promote the Club, the DJs and the Bands which play there. The Club is run by a group of managers, each heading up one of 6 sections, i.e.: Bands, Discos, Bars, Catering, Private Functions, & Merchandising. You have been appointed recently, as a Web-consultant, to; devise & develop a Web-site that will provide a suitable Web Presence for The Zeitgeist Club.
16
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 16 The Zeitgeist Club - Problems 1.It is difficult to get any information on what events are taking place, or when, and, when potential customers phone to ask what is on, the receptionists are often surly and unhelpful. 2.No background information is provided on bands or other events, the customers are assumed to know what they are buying. 3.There are often late changes to the advertised programme of events, which are poorly communicated to customers. 4.Customers must book and pay in person at reception, which entails a visit to The Zeitgeist Club venue itself. 5.For popular events, customers often have to queue outside for a considerable length of time prior to doors opening, and it is often raining. 7.Customers are unaware of the wide variety of food, which range from simple sandwiches to full three-course meals, which can be purchased throughout the club, and do not know what this food will costs them. 8.The merchandise stand is difficult to access on busy nights and customers cannot easily see the range of merchandise on offer, or the prices. Often, even if they do make it to the front of the queue at the merchandise stand, a customer will not have enough money with them to purchase the merchandise they want. 9.Many customers are not aware that The Zeitgeist Club can be booked for Private Functions, and those who are aware are unsure of the cost of such a booking. 10.No real attempt is made to monitor customer satisfaction, as there is no reliable way of capturing customer comments. The receptionists, and other staff, often forget to pass on customer comments (both good & bad) to management.
17
Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 17 Additional Comments (from the Staff of The Zeitgeist Club) “If we could get customers to register as ‘members’ on-line, then this would enable the Club to collect valuable marketing information and provide customers with a ‘passport’ when making reservations for events.” “Ideally we would like to allow customers to browse forthcoming events on-line, from the comfort of their own homes, and to make reservations immediately.” “We would have the opportunity to collect extensive customer data for marketing purposes.” “We could ask customers to complete customer satisfaction surveys.” “We could show customers the merchandise that relates to a particular DJ, Band, etc. in advance of their visit to the club. Then, when they visit the club, they would be able to make sure that they have enough money with them to purchase the merchandise they want.”
