1
QOTD Name the four phases of matter.
2
States of Matter Mr. Dunnum
3
4 A state of matter is the physical form in which substances exist. Solid Liquid Gas Plasma HOW MANY STATES OF MATTER?
4
STATES OF MATTER Matter consist of atoms and molecules Now the way that these particles move determines which state of matter that substance is in.
5
SOLIDS In solids particles do not move fast enough to overcome the strong attraction between them They are held tightly in place The particles just vibrate in place
6
Crystalline Have an orderly 3-d arrangement of particles That means that they are arranged in repeating pattern rows Iron, diamond, and ice Amorphous Particles are in no particular order Each particle is in a spot, but no organized pattern Rubber, and wax No true melting point 2 TYPES OF SOLIDS
7
The particles in a liquid slide pass one another until the liquid conforms to the shape of its container Since the particles are so close together its hard to push them closer together Ex. Hydraulic systems LIQUIDS
8
Liquids Definite volume But no definite shape
9
Name the 4 states of matter How do the particles in solids move? Example of crystalline and amorphous solids How do the particles in liquids move? REVIEW
10
Surface tension- tension on the surface of water that acts like a thin layer of skin. LIQUIDS
11
Viscosity- Liquids resistance to flow
12
Gas is the state where matter changes in both shape and volume The particles in gas move fast enough to break away from each other In gas there is empty space between particles Pressure- is the amount of force exerted on a given area With gas the greater the particles and the faster they collide, the higher the pressure is Beach ball & Basketball GASES
13
Boyle’s Law At a constant temp. the volume increases as the pressure decreases At a constant temp. volume decrease as the pressure increases GASES
14
Charles’s Law At a constant pressure, with and increase in temp the volume also increases At a constant pressure, with an decrease in temp the volume will also decrease
15
PLASMAS 99% of the known matter in the universe is made of the state called plasma Plasma is the state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume
16
PLASMAS Plasmas conduct electric current Naturally are found in lightening, fire, and the incredible light show called aurora borealis Artificial plasmas fluorescent lights and plasma balls
17
Explain the difference in solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. What is the difference with Boyle’s law and Charles’s law In which state do the particles just vibrate WHAT YOU LEARNED?
