States of Matter
2
What is matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space is matter. Matter is made up of atoms. Matter can be living or non-living. Matter comes in different states with unique properties: Solid Liquid Gas
3
Properties of Solids 1.Solids don’t change shape easily. 2.Solid particles don’t move around much (they vibrate). 3.Solid particles are in a pattern or an aligned array.
4
Properties of Liquids 1.Liquids take the shape of their container. 2.Liquids have surface tension (particles hold on to each other) 3.Liquids move around.
5
Properties of Gases 1.Gas is invisible (particles are to far apart to see) 2.Gas particles move around freely.
6
Challenge Questions 1.Think about a can of soda. What state(s) of matter are in a can of soda? (give examples) 2.What about your body. What state(s) of matter are in your body? (give examples) 3.Think about a basketball. What state(s) of matter are in the basketball? Explain.
