MODEL NOTES TOPIC 1

MODEL A representation, picture, or description of how something looks and works. It can be a physical or mental model. PHYSICAL MODEL- a representation of something that you can SEE example: Toy car MENTAL MODEL- a representation of something you can not see directly example: the atom

THE PARTICLE MODEL FOR MATTER: Explains why matter has different properties in different states PARTICLE = an atom, the smallest piece of matter MODEL= a representation MATTER = anything that has a mass and a volume ** Mass is the amount of matter in an object ** Volume is how much space an object takes up

THE PARTICLE MODEL FOR MATTER STATES THAT ALL MATTER IS MADE UP OF TINY MOVING PARTICLES CALLED ATOMS

STATES OF MATTER Solid: Atoms are close together. Has a definite shape and volume ** think of the inside of a classroom

STATES OF MATTER Liquid: Atoms have some space between them. Has a definite volume but not a definite shape **think of the hallway during passing

STATES OF MATTER Gas: Atoms have a lot of space between them. Does not have a definite shape or volume ** think of when you leave the building

SOLID, LIQUID, GAS

SCIENTIFIC METHOD NOTES ________________________________tells you what the lab is about ________________________________the question that will be answered after the experiment ________________________________your answer to the problem BEFORE you do the experiment - what you think will happen ________________________________the equipment you need to do the lab ________________________________the directions you must READ and FOLLOW ________________________________this is where you record your results _________________________________the answer to the problem based on your lab results * the prediction is also referred to as the HYPOTHESIS Title Problem Prediction* Materials Procedure Data/Observations Conclusion
