3. Filtering is the LAW! Children’s Internet Protection Act Communications Decency Act of 1996 We need to keep kids safe and we are liable. Children need to be protected from harm that exists on the internet. How would we teach if school computers could access Myspace and Facebook? (and we know the kids wouldn’t be the only distracted ones…) Not every teacher properly supervises students on the internet.

4. First Amendment anyone? Who determines what information gets blocked? We need to educate staff, parents and students on safe practices CIPA requires the filtering of violent image and pornography Web 2.0 resources are left unused because they are prohibited by schools We need to supervise student use Filtering is not 100% reliable-the web is too fast growing and students learn ways in which to bypass the internet filters.

5. The ALA Position on Internet Censorship Protect the integrity of the First Amendment Libraries can not guarantee the filters to work without fail which leads to liability Intellectual Freedom Right to access materials (Government policies and business practice have restricted access)

6. Amy and Michelle believe… While filtering is the law, we border on censorship when over-restricted. Education is key…After all, its our job! Actively Monitor Students will thrive if allowed to use the technology they use at home. Think of the possibilities for exceptional learning!
