4. Literary Term: Dialogue Dialogue is a conversation between or among characters in a literary work. Dialogue is usually set off by quotation marks, and a new paragraph indicates a change of speaker. EXAMPLE: “Do you want to go to the movies this weekend?” asked Jane. “No thanks. I have loads of homework to do,” I replied sullenly. Why would an author use dialogue? – to reveal character traits and relationships (indirect characterization) – To advance the action of the plot and develop the conflict – To add variety, color, and realism to narratives (stories)

The words, pronunciations, and grammar of a dialect differ from those of the standard form of a language. Why would an author use dialect? – To reveal the story’s setting, to make settings more vivid, and to add realism to narratives (stories) – to reveal character traits and relationships (indirect characterization)
