5 Irony The opposite of what is expected -- examples include verbal irony, situational irony, and dramatic irony

6 Local Color A writing about a particular locality that uses the customs and dialect of that place

7 Mood The emotional attitude that an author takes toward his subject

8 Satire Use of sarcasm or irony to attack or ridicule a habit, custom, or idea

9 Symbol An object that represents a concept or theme in a literary work

10 Tone The stated or implied attitude of an author toward his subject in a particular literary work -- the author reveals his attitude through his choice of words and details
