Dialect Regional Speech

Irony The opposite of what is expected -- examples include verbal irony, situational irony, and dramatic irony

Local Color A writing about a particular locality that uses the customs and dialect of that place

Mood The emotional attitude that an author takes toward his subject

Satire Use of sarcasm or irony to attack or ridicule a habit, custom, or idea

Symbol An object that represents a concept or theme in a literary work

Tone The stated or implied attitude of an author toward his subject in a particular literary work -- the author reveals his attitude through his choice of words and details
