Characterization How the author creates a character

Direct Characterization The author tells us, using adjectives, makes direct statements. Example: The poor, old man was invariably kind to others.

Indirect Characterization The author reveals character traits in other ways, not just telling us. Think: How do you judge a person?

Indirect Characterization Other character’s comments about the person ( This one technique is like gossip! )

Indirect Characterization Dialogue with other characters. (Think about talking with your friends about someone.)

Indirect Characterization Description of how a character dresses or talks, where a character lives, how a character acts. Dialect City or Country Clothing
