2 Why use a survey? Re-accreditation work showed little data to “evaluate our effectiveness” –Higher Education Research Institute’s College Student Survey (’96, ’98, ’00) only asked one question about “library facilities”

3 Why create our own survey? LibQual too expensive Wanted to administer the survey every other year Wanted a comprehensive survey (collections, services, info lit, etc.) Not aware of other great options

4 How? Discovered University of Washington’s survey –Triennial survey of students and faculty –http://www.lib.washington.edu/assessment/http://www.lib.washington.edu/assessment/ Modified survey to fit Dordt Work with Computer Services department to create online version Got approval from campus Assessment Committee

5 2002 Student Survey Available online for 2 weeks at end of spring semester 352 students completed survey out of a possible 1332 (26%) http://www.ipalgroup.org/secure/student_web_survey_2002.pdf

6 2002 Faculty Survey Paper survey sent to all regular and associate adjunct faculty Given three weeks to complete; accepted surveys for four weeks afterwards 38 returned out of a possible 82 (46%) http://www.ipalgroup.org/secure/faculty_survey_2002.pdf

9 2004 Surveys Gave faculty an online survey and added an incentive Aggressively advertised the student survey Adjusted some questions based on feedback and changes that had occurred (e.g. added question about environment)
