Meiosis Making Sperm and Eggs
2
Vocabulary You get half your chromosomes from your mom and half from your dad--these pairs are called homologous. A cell that contains a complete set of chromosomes is called diploid (2N). Sperm/eggs have a single set of chromosomes, they are called haploid (1N). You get half your chromosomes from your mom and half from your dad--these pairs are called homologous. Meiosis: process that cuts the number of chromosomes in a diploid cell in half Meiosis I Interphase I:chromosomes replicate Prophase I: each chromosome pairs with its homologous chromosome to form a tetrad Metaphase I: Tetrads line up in the middle of the cell Anaphase I: Tetrads separate, homologous chromosomes pulled to opposite sides of the cell Result: Two (unique) diploid daughter cells Meiosis I Interphase I:chromosomes replicate Prophase I: each chromosome pairs with its homologous chromosome to form a tetrad Metaphase I: Tetrads line up in the middle of the cell Anaphase I: Tetrads separate, homologous chromosomes pulled to opposite sides of the cell Result: Two (unique) diploid daughter cells

Meiosis II Prophase II: chromosomes do not replicate again Metaphase II: chromosomes line up in the middle of the cells Anaphase II: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell Telophase II: Membranes form = four haploid daughter cells Prophase II: chromosomes do not replicate again Metaphase II: chromosomes line up in the middle of the cells Anaphase II: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell Telophase II: Membranes form = four haploid daughter cells
