Strategic Planning l Strategic: Of or pertaining to the science or art of...command as applied to the overall planning and conduct of large-scale operations; a plan of action resulting from the practice of this science. l Plan: Any detailed scheme, program, or method worked out beforehand for the accomplishment of an object; a proposed or tentative project or goal. Main task of Strategic Planning is to arrive at a common vision and to brainstorm strategic directions in achieving the vision
3
Approaches l Several approaches: l Structured Vision/Mission/SWOT/Programs l Quality Function Deployment (QFD) l Structured planning process that aims to identify a set of desired goals and brainstorm the best way to achieve them l Poll and prioritize l Follow-through is essential with regular progress monitoring
4
SIX STEPS TO ORGANIZATIONAL SUCCESS
5
1. Make an organizational commitment to do strategic planning...or not to do it.... You must make a conscious organizational decision. l Select a planning group l Discuss pros and cons of doing strategic planning l Pros: l Cons: l Determine how much time the association has or wants to take, to develop a plan. l Who will participate...who are the players in the planning process...the stakeholders? l Where and when will planning sessions be held? l Who will oversee the process and keep it on track?
6
2. Take stock - who are we now? review your organizational history. l Write or review your organizations mission statement l Assess “who are we now?” by: l Evaluating internal strengths, weaknesses l Evaluating external opportunities and threats or challenges
7
3. Set goals - goals are what you want to achieve. l Where does your organization want to be in one year, three years - longer? l Make goals very specific l Be sure your goals are inspiring l Consider classifying goals into 3 categories: l External l Internal l community outreach
8
4. Develop strategies for achieving your goals. Here is where you answer the question, and How do we get there from here? l For each goal, create a strategic time line with a sequence of steps leading to the goal. l Narrow your list of goals and accompanying time lines to the ones you are actually prepared to adopt and implement. l For each time line, estimate the time, money, and other resources needed. l Write it down!
9
QUESTIONS FOR YOUR SECTION TO ANSWER 1. What is your purpose? 2. Where are you now, in relation to your purpose? 3. Where do you want to be? 4. How do you get there from here?
10
5. Implement Your Plan l Use the plan to develop a detailed work plan for the coming year. l Break each step into activities and specify who is in charge of the activity, when it will be completed, and how much it will cost. l Use the work plan to develop your budget for the coming year. l Keep the plan on everyone’s mind l How does what you want to do fit in with your long range goals and strategies?
11
6. Evaluate Your Plan and Your Progress l Review progress at each section and/or committee meeting l Annual review by the strategic planning committee l Recognize everyone who is involved in achieving goals and “reaching the stretch.”
12
STRATEGIC PLAN CHECKLIST A good strategic plan should be: l FEASIBLE: Does the organization have the resources to carry out the plan? l MEASURABLE: Are the goals specific enough that you will know when you have achieved them? l TIME-SPECIFIC: Is the plan translated into comprehensible time lines and time-specific work plans with clear deadlines? l FLEXIBLE: Have you scheduled regular review sessions for assessment and revision? l INSPIRING: Does the plan give people a sense of something worth working for? Is it bold and imaginative? l IN WRITING: If the plan isn’t in writing, you might as well not have a plan because everyone will have a different idea of what the plan is.
