PBCAT Software Upgrade Progress and Plans Carol Tan Esse Federal Highway Administration David Harkey University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center Traffic Records Forum July 14 - 17, 2003 Denver, Colorado
2
Presentation Overview What is crash typing? Overview of PBCAT version 1.0 Ongoing applications of PBCAT Planned upgrades for version 2.0
3
Crash Typing Traditional crash data provide where, when and whom facts about ped and bike crashes Lacks information on the sequence of events/causes leading up to crash –important in selecting countermeasures Crash typing fills this gap –initially developed by NHTSA in the 1970’s for peds and bikes
4
PBCAT Version 1.0 Development Goals –Create an automated tool for quickly and easily typing ped and bike crashes –Update/refine the definitions of the 1970’s –Provide links between crash types and potential countermeasures –Provide limited report capability Released in 1999
5
PBCAT Distribution Widely distributed - more than 600 software orders from all 50 states and 28 countries www.walkinginfo.org/pbcat
6
FHWA Pedestrian ITS & Safety Engineering Countermeasures Demo Project Projects in three municipalities –Miami-Dade –Las Vegas –San Francisco Determine high crash locations Identify specific types of pedestrian crashes –Application of PBCAT Implement appropriate countermeasures
7
NC Ped/Bike Crash Query System 5 years of data 11,000 ped crashes 5,000 bike crashes Annual Crash Facts On-line Query Function Summary Reports www.pedbikeinfo.org/pbcat
8
PBCAT Version 2.0 Product Goals –Enhanced crash analysis tool in a more familiar user interface –More user options and greater customization –Greatly enhanced countermeasure information to help improve walking and bicycling safety
9
General Enhancements Navigation and appearance more familiar and user-friendly –i.e., Windows Look Compatibility with existing Access databases Section 508 compliant
