Acquire-Floodplains Type of floodplain Student-created explanation of floodplain Locations of floodplain in Harris County Explanation of potential flooding Valley Floodplain This floodplain has creak valleys and the ground is often more sloped then flat. These floodplains are mostly in the Northwestern part of Harris County. The flooding can last up to a couple days and can also be very deep. Major River Floodplain The floodplain occurs along a river, and can be very fast and deep. Along the San Jacinto River The flooding in this area can last for weeks. Shallow Floodplain This floodplain occurs when channels reach their limit. These floodplains are present in many areas of Harris County. Flooding usually lasts for a couple hours, but thousands of business's and homes can be affected. Coastal Floodplain During a hurricane or an unusually high tide, buildings close to the ground can flood. The Southeastern part of Harris County. Low-lying structures near the coast can be affected. Ground subsidence can result in the coastal areas flooding more severely and frequently. 5 th Scenario When rainfall exceeds the capacity of ditches and sewers, the water overflows into the streets and can flood homes and buildings. This kind of flooding is not restricted to any part of Harris County. It can happen anywhere. Residences not near a bayou or creak can be affected if there is too much rainfall. Q. What are the three different categories of floods. Rank them in order from strongest to weakest. A. 1.500 Year Flood 2.100 Year Flood 3.10 Year Flood

Acquire- Hurricane Data Location Category of hurricane that would require an evacuation Storm surge height that would flood the campus Hurricane Threat Level Bayside (La Porte, TX) 12328 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, TX Category 3-5 4.48- 22.4 D NE Houston (Huffman, TX) 12688 FM 1960, Huffman, TX None Not Affected A W. Tomball (Tomball, TX) 29608 Liberty Ln., Tomball, TX None Not Affected A Downtown East (Houston, TX) 650 Oats Rd., Houston, TX Category 4-5 Not Affected B Downtown Central (Houston, TX) 1400 Travis St., Houston, TX None Not affected A What is a storm surge? A large amount of water that hits the coastline where a hurricane is coming through. Why is storm surge such a huge problem in the Gulf of Mexico instead of places like the Atlantic Ocean? The shallow waters in the Gulf make the storm surge stronger. Explain the three causes of storm surge. 1.When low pressure builds, water from the ocean is sucked to the middle of the storm. 2.Hurricanes 3.Wave and tide action What makes storm surge so devastating? When the surge reaches the coast, it destroys everything in its path, and buildings that aren’t specifically designed to handle a storm surge will get crushed.

The images included on the map are examples of which kind of weathering? Physical G. How far are Harris County’s faults moving per year? 0.2- 0.8 Inches per Year H. How would faults and weathering impact your University? Cracks could form and destroy the building structure. This could cause costly repairs.

Analyze-Flood Plains Floodplains - Each location and its corresponding floodplain creates a different flooding scenario. Which floodplain creates the worst situation? Rank the floodplains in order from best to worst based on your analysis. Explain your ranking for each individual location/floodplain. 1.Shallow Floodplain- Flooding can affect thousands of homes and businesses 2.Valley Floodplain- Flooding can last a couple days and be very deep 3.Major River Floodplain- Flooding in this area can last for weeks 4.Costal Floodplain- Occurs along the coastline

Analyze-Fault Data - What types of problems do you anticipate from the fault data? - Rank the locations in order from worst to best based on your analysis of fault data. - Explain your ranking for each individual location. Downtown East – Has an estimated 5,000 dollar repair costs and is near many faults. Bayside – Has an estimated 2,000 dollar repair cost and is near many faults. Downtown Central –. Has an estimated 1,000 dollar repair cost and is near a few faults. NE Houston – Has no fault lines in area. Has an estimated 500 dollar repair cost. W. Tomball – Has no fault lines in area. Estimated repair cost is 100 dollars

Analyze Crime Data and Land Prices - Explain how crime data will affect the recruitment of future students. - Future students will not want to attend a school in an area high in crime. Students want to live in a safe environment. - Explain how land prices will affect the recruitment of future students. - College students all ready have many school expenses and some may not be able to afford to live in an area with high land prices. A student might not go to a school if they can’t afford to live close by. - Predict how the Board of Directors and investors will respond to both sets of data. - The Board of Directors and other investors are going to want to buy land in a safe neighborhood, with lower land prices. However, I think the Board would rather buy land that’s more expensive then buy land in a dangerous area.

Analyze Other sources of information Explanation of how the source would be beneficial Location that would likely benefit the most from your source Location that would likely benefit the least from your source. Near Campus Housing There needs to be enough space for all the students to live. In the country, for example, there is lots of land for housing, but there probably aren’t very many apartment buildings in place. In the city, however, there are lots of apartments but not much room. Land Available The college might need a lot of land to build on, and in the middle of the city there isn’t enough room to build a huge campus. The college is going to want land to maybe expand in the future.
13
Analyze Conclusion - Of the data that you collected (and is listed on the right) which data set do you feel is most important to your decision-making process. Rank the six data sets in order from most influential to least influential. Floodplains- A university can’t flood a lot because then the school would have to be constanly closing for repairs. Watersheds Land prices- If land prices are expensive, Fault data and mechanical weathering- Hurricane storm surge and potential damage- A university must be able to withstand a hurricane. Crime data- Students shouldn’t have to live in a violent area.
