Carbon Cycle 1. What is a fossil? 2. What is the difference between a renewable and non-renewable resource? 3. Do you think fossil fuels are renewable or non- renewable? Explain your reasoning. 4. What is one disadvantage of using fossil fuels as our primary source of energy? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst!
2
Objectives By the end of today, all SWBAT… Identify the forms and sources of carbon Describe the 6 steps of the carbon cycle, and how humans affect it
3
What’s good? Catalyst Review Carbon! Steps of the carbon cycle Musical chairs Independent practice Exit question Worksheet Pack from yesterday Study Guide Quiz tomorrow! AGENDA HOMEWORK
4
Intro Vocabulary Carbon = an element that is found in all living/dead things Fossil fuels = energy sources formed from the fossils of dead organisms Fossil fuels are made of carbon Examples: oil, coal, natural gas
5
Key Point #1: Carbon is found in different forms and different sources Sources of carbon – Plants – Animals – Soil – Fossil fuels – Dead things – Atmosphere
6
Key Point #2: Carbon moves from source to source in five different processes (steps)
7
Photosynthesis Respiration Decomposition Combustion (fossil fuel burning) Gas exchange Five steps of the carbon cycle
8
Section 2.2 Summary – pages 46 - 57 Carbon Cycle A
9
A Process: Cellular respiration Illustration Description: Arrow points from plants to atmosphere Definition: plants and animals break down organic carbon to CO 2 Money Analogy: returning money (CO 2 ) to the bank
10
Respiration CO 2
11
Section 2.2 Summary – pages 46 - 57 Carbon Cycle B
12
B Process: Photosynthesis Illustration Description: Arrow points from atmosphere to plants Definition: plants convert CO 2 into glucose (sugar) Money Analogy: taking money out of the bank as dollars
13
Photosynthesis + CO 2
14
Section 2.2 Summary – pages 46 - 57 Carbon Cycle C
15
C Process: Combustion Illustration Description: from factory to atmosphere Definition: burning fossil fuels releases CO 2 Money Analogy: returning money (CO 2 ) to the bank
16
Combustion CO 2 !!!!
17
Section 2.2 Summary – pages 46 - 57 Carbon Cycle D D
18
D Process: Gas exchange Illustration Description: arrows between water and atmosphere Definition: CO 2 dissolves in and out of water Money Analogy: money in and out of bank
19
Gas exchange Water CO 2
20
Section 2.2 Summary – pages 46 - 57 Carbon Cycle E
21
E Process: Decomposition Illustration Description: dead animals to underground Definition: carbon stored as fossil fuels after things die Money Analogy: money hidden under the bed
22
Decomposition C C C C C C C
23
What step of the carbon cycle??? Involves plants removing CO 2 from the atmosphere? Involves plants and animals releasing CO 2 into the atmosphere? Involves a human activity releasing CO 2 into the atmosphere? Adds and releases CO 2 into the atmosphere at the same time?
24
Musical Chairs
25
Take the carbon cycle a step farther… Answer questions 16 - 20 on your classwork Work together Think hard Answer thoughtfully
26
Independent Practice Individual work. Work hard. Think critically.
27
Exit Questions Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Exit Question! DESCRIBE what occurs in THREE of the following steps of the carbon cycle: photosynthesis, cellular respiration, decomposition, gas exchange, combustion HOMEWORK: Worksheet # 1 – 8 Back is Extra Credit
