3 TERENA’s mission The four pillars of TERENA: representation of members’ interests political, policy and industrial contacts liaison with other continents the Technical Programme developing, testing and promoting new networking technologies, services and applications workshops, task forces, projects knowledge transfer conferences, workshops and seminars assistance to less-advanced networks providing a “cradle” for new services e.g. pilot services

5 TF-CSIRT Collaboration between CSIRTs in Europe Participation by >25 CSIRTs from research networks, telecom operators and governments Major work items: –meetings, seminars –Contact information –Liaison with FIRST, European Commission –Links to incident handling tools –Training workshops for new (staff of) CSIRTs –Incident Description and Registration Framework –Trusted Introducer pilot service www.terena.nl/task-forces/tf-csirt/

6 TF-LSD Preparation of LDAP service deployment Participation by directory experts from > 10 countries Major objectives: –determine suitability of LDAPv3 protocol for directory-based network and information services for research community in Europe –prepare the establishment of a Europe-wide pilot White Pages index service –define other directory-based services for European research community –contribute to standardisation process on LDAP (IETF, ITU, CEN) –encourage NRENs to use the results of the DIRECT project –support development of open-source LDAP implementation www.terena.nl/task-forces/tf-lsd/

7 Public Key Infrastructure Came up in a number of TERENA activities. Mini-symposium at managerial level (Paris 12 October 2000) with presentations from CREN and IBM. Number of national plans/services for PKI 6 December 2000: workshop bringing together national CA initiatives for research and higher education community in Europe

8 TF-STREAM Investigate audio/video streaming media technology and audio/video conferencing Participation by experts from > 15 countries Major work items: –Europe-wide video conferences –glossary of terms for audio/video streaming and conferencing –policy document for publishing audio/video material in the public domain –Web repository and index of publicly available audio/video material –recommendation on best practice for generation of metadata in audio/video content creation –clearinghouse of multicast monitoring tools www.terena.nl/task-forces/tf-stream/

9 TF-TANT Evaluate important lower-layer technologies; including the work of the QUANTUM Test Programme (jointly with DANTE) Active participation by > 40 experts from > 15 countries November 1998 - October 2000 Major work areas: –QoS/DiffServ –MPLS –ATM signalling –Policy Control –Flow-based Monitoring and Analysis –IPv6 –Multicast www.terena.nl/task-forces/tf-tant/
