The Nervous System
3
Parts of the Nervous System Central Nervous System Peripheral Nervous System
4
Central Nervous System Control center of the body Brain Spinal cord
5
The Brain Cerebrum Cerebellum Brainstem
6
Cerebrum Interprets information from senses Controls movement of skeletal muscles Carries out learning, remembering, making judgements
7
Cerebellum and Brainstem Cerebellum - coordinates actions of your muscles and helps you keep your balance Brainstem - control’s involuntary actions (breathing and heartbeat)
8
Peripheral Nervous System Nerves that branch out from the central nervous system and connect it to the rest of the body
9
Reflexes An automatic response that occurs very rapidly and without conscious control E.g. touching a hot object
10
What is a concussion? A bruiselike injury of the brain. Occurs when soft tissue of the cerebrum bumps into the skull May cause a headache, dizziness, drowsiness, or confusions
11
Review What is the function of the central nervous system? Which organs are part of this system? Control center of the body and includes the brain and spinal cord
12
Review (cont.) What is the peripheral nervous system and what are its functions? A network of nerves that branch out from the central nervous system and carries messages throughout the body.
13
Review (cont.) Explain what a reflex is. An automatic response that occurs rapidly and without conscious control.
14
Review (cont.) What symptoms might indicate that a person’s cerebellum has been injured? Loss of balance and poor muscle coordination.
