What caused the Russian revolution? Russia was politically economically socially backwards Romanov czar ruled for 300 years Military losses in Russo- Japanese war Spread of liberal ideas like Democracy and communism

Russia before the revolution Russia was backwards Oppressive/conservative absolute monarchy They had desperate poverty 90% were illiterate peasants There was a lack of industrialization

Who was Karl Marx? He was the father of communism He was a German Philosopher He saw history as a struggle between the haves and the have not He wrote The Communist Manifesto in 1848 He came up with communism

Vladimir Lenin He was the boss of the Bolshevik party He was the founder of the soviet state He lead the Russian revolution In 1921 he introduced the New Economic Policy He warned other against Stalin’s growing desire for power

What is communism? A theory of government in which wealth and property are owned in common, and production and labor are shared equally among the people in reality the means of production and distribution are owned and controlled by the state No rich and poor People can’t do what they want to do

What was Russia like after the revolution? The winner of the Russian civil war was the reds The reds were communists The country became known as the union of soviet socialists republics Joseph Stalin became boss of Russia He created a totalitarian state He made the Soviet union into an industrial and political power He had millions of Russians were tortured, imprisoned, and murdered
