Introduction Premature rupture of membranes(PROM) is defined as the break of the amniotic sack before the onset of labor before 37 week resulting leakage of the amniotic fluid. PROM is one of the most common complication of both preterm pregnancies. The aim of the study is to determine the most frequent risk factors and obstetrical consequences of premature rupture of membranes.

Materials and Methods A retrospective study was performed in the University Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology no.1 from Targu-Mures, Romania during January-December 2012. We evaluated 101 pacients with PROM in whom we analized the observation papers.

Conclusion About 8% to 10% of all pregnancies are complicated by PROM. PROM is an important risk factor for prematurity. There are a number of risk factors, which have been associated with premature rupture of membranes, including cigarette smoking, antepartum bleeding, multiple gestation and polyhidramnios.
