1 8-2B Solve Quadratic Equations by Factoring
In your spiral notebook, answer the following question. What is a quadratic equation? Algebra Glencoe McGraw-Hill Linda Stamper

2 Zero-Product Property
Consider the following products. Notice that in each case, at least one of the factors is zero. These examples illustrate the Zero Product Property. Zero-Product Property If the product of two factors is zero, then at least one of the factors must be zero.

3 The connection between factoring and knowing the zero product property is that it can be used to solve quadratic equations. To solve equations using the zero product property, write the equation with the terms in factored form on one side of the equal sign and zero on the other side. Each factor is then set equal to zero, and the resulting equations are solved to arrive at the solutions (also known as roots).

4 Solve the equation. Write problem. Subtract 7x from each side. Factor. Set each factor equal to zero and solve! Solutions or roots are: , Check each solution.

5 Solve the equation. Example 2 Example 1 Example 3 Example 4
