History of Lüneburg Lüneburg is a very old town. It exists since the 8th century. Because Lüneburg was the only contractor of salt in northern Germany it soon took part in the Hanse which was a very Germany. That made the city very rich and famous. The salt was used for conserving fish which was very important in the middle ages, because at that time did not exists any fridge. In 1980 the last mine was shut down, because of the centuries continuing digging of salt the earth between the mines and the fundaments of the houses became very thin so a part of the city sank down. The Kalkberg of Lünebug The Kalkberg of Lüneburg is made out of plaster and about 250 million years old. Until Feburary 1371 there was a castle on the top of the mountain which was ruled by the princedom of Lüneburg-Braunschweig. The original hight of the Kalkberg was 80 m, but the digging of plaster caused a lower hight of 56 m. the Kalkberg and the area around it became one of the first reserved landscapes in Germany. The Old Town A very special and beautiful place of Lüneburg is the Old Town. it did not get destroyed by wars therefore it still has the same flair than back in time. Over century continues mining caused a sinking of a big part of the Old Town. This extreme sinking caused the break down of a church and the around standing houses, because otherwise they would have been uncontrollably collapsed. The „Sande“ The Sande is one of the most lovely and popular places in Lüneburg. It is 240 m long and 20 m wide. If you take a look at the gable roofs you see, that this place is even one of the most beautiful places of Germany. Curlicues and snail like looking ornaments decorate them. In the middle ages this place was made out of sand and therefore it got its name. Today it‘s paved for the heavy traffic. Earlier it was an important trading point for merchants who sold their salt and other goods. Now this place is used for a lot of festivals and other activities and it is a liked meeting point for the youth of Lüneburg. It is also the place where the major bus traffic takes place. The „Bäckerstraße“ The Bäckerstraße is the biggest shopping mile in Lüneburg. There you can find everything what your heart desires. The great variety leads from expensive jewelry over clothes to just a simple fish roll. The street connects the Sande with the town hall square and is the most visited street of Lüneburg. The Town Hall The town hall of Lüneburg is one of the most beautiful ones in north Germany. It was erected already in the 13. century. Often it got completed and reconstructed. The „Stint“ of Lüneburg The Stint got his name from the type of fish named „Stint“, with which the people dealt in the middle ages. Today it is one of the biggest connected pub miles Europe's.
