GRADE 5, MODULE 1: UNIT 2, LESSON 3 inferring about characters based on how they respond to challenges Learning Targets I can answer comprehension questions based on text from esperanza rising that I have read independently. I can identify situations in esperanza rising where a character’s human rights are challenged. I can make inferences from the text about esperanza, mama, and abuelita. I can use context clues to help me determine the meaning of words in esperanza rising. I can write to explain my thinking about the characters in esperanza rising. Vocabulary – independently, identify, comprehension, challenge, infer, inference, quotes, inferential, denial of property, human rights, discriminatory, anguish, smothered, composure, indignation Put the following long term targets for the unit on sentence strips in the room. Close Reading of pages 22-23
At the end of the chapter, why does Esperanza feel her heart drop and that she has sunk into a ‘dark hole of despair and disbelief’? Discuss what happened at the end of Chapter 2 with your triad. Read page 23. How are you able to figure out what happened? Share YOUR THOUGHTS WITH YOUR TRIAD. Mark your text with evidence flags to show how you inferred that Papa died. Add an evidence flag to the opening of Chapter 3 with the phrase “Esperanza grieving” The text says… so I infer that… Begin an anchor chart called “Inferring by Using Text Clues”

Make a connection Read the 2nd learning target and review the meaning of the word challenged. Talk in your triads about the human rights you remember from studying the UDHR. Share with your triad where you placed your evidence flags as you read Chapter 3 for homework. Let’s start an anchor chart called “Human Rights Challenges in Esperanza Rising.” Use the UDHR note catcher and UDHR anchor charts for help.

Work With Your Triad Review the Norms for Triad Talk.
Read the 3rd learning target. Talk in your group about a time when someone you knew responded to a challenge. What does that tell you about that person? Read the 4th learning target. Write in your reading journal what one thing you already know about Esperanza, Mama, Abuelita, and Miguel. Use one page for each character.
7
Focus on Esperanza’s family
Read one question at a time. Think on your own, then talk together to answer the question. Use your evidence flags to mark evidence that answers the question as you work. Display Text-Dependent Questions for Chapter 3 on page11.

Summarize and Ticket out the Door
Reread the learning targets for today. Add new strategies to the anchor chart “Reading Esperanza Rising.” On an index card, select one question from your triad talk for which you feel you have a complete answer. Write the number of your question and your answer, using details from the text. Write a definition of the word inferring in your reading journal. Make sure to add: using context clues to figure out vocabulary and thinking about how characters respond to challenges to the chart Reading Esperanza Rising.

Tonight’s Assignment GRADE 5, MODULE 1: UNIT 2 LESSON 3 Homework: Purpose for Reading, Chapter 4: “Los Higos/Figs” (pages 30–57) What challenges do the characters in this chapter face? How does each character respond? As you read, think about these questions. Use your evidence flags to mark specific passages in the text to discuss with your triad. You do not need to write out answers as part of your homework; just keep track of your thinking with your evidence flags. Homework is on page 14.
