The Northern Renaissance F The Renaissance came later to the north because of the plague and the distance from Italy. F The Northern renaissance began in Flanders - modern Belgium, The Netherlands, and northern France. F Albrecht Durer helped spread Italian ideas.

Flemish Painters F Jan and Hubert van Eyck portrayed towns people. F They also developed oil painting. F Pieter Brueghel was a leading Flemish artist who painted scenes of daily life. F Peter Paul Reubens - painted large voluptuous ladies. Hans Holbein – portraits of famous people

The Northern Humanists F The Development of the Printing Press in Germany led to the spread of knowledge F The Philosophers Erasmus and Thomas More were great Northern thinkers and writers. F Erasmus’ In Praise of Folly,and More’s Utopia

Northern Literature F English Literature reached it’s peak in the late 1500’s, early 1600’s. F William Shakespeare, The Plays Hamlet, Othello, Taming of the Shrew, etc. F Francois Rabelais wrote Gargantua and Pantagruel F Miquel de Cervantes wrote Don Quixote.

The Printing Press F The printing press and cheaper paper made books accessible to most people. F Johann Gutenberg of Mainz, Germany printed a complete edition of the bible. F More people began to learn to read and write. F The printing press and free thought lead to the Protestant Reformation.
